A Little Bit About Us…

Prairie Lake Lodge and Outfitters is a family owned operation of the Keating family near the town of Russell in the province of Manitoba. Gerald Keating and his brother Lyle were born and raised in the area and have operated several successful business operations in the local area for over fifty years.  Lyle’s life has been devoted to farming.  Over the years, both Lyle and Gerald have acquired a significant land base that has been used mainly in the production of grains and oilseeds.  We are currently operating over 7000 acres of land within a ten mile radius of our farm yard.  Gerald’s main line of business for many years was road construction and excavation operating as Keating Brothers Ltd.  Keating Brothers Ltd. has built many of the roads connecting one end of our farm to the other.

The management of Prairie Lake Lodge and Outfitters is primarily the responsibility of Gerald’s two boys.  David will be our head guide and will be overseeing the entire operation to ensure that everything runs smoothly from the minute you arrive to your final minute in the field.  David is an avid duck hunter and enjoys setting up for both pond and field shoots.  Mark operates roughly ½ of the farm’s total land base and because the timing of the grain harvest coincides exactly with the fall hunting season will only be involved with your hunt as time and weather conditions permit.

How Are We Different from Other Outfitters?

The outfitting business is competitive. Everybody offers "the hunt of a lifetime."  You are paying a significant fee to hunt with us.  What separates us from the rest of the pack?  Here are thirty thousand and five reasons why you should select Prairie Lake Lodge and Outfitters to host you on your next hunting trip:

  • The first and most important reason is that the bird populations are absolutely enormous.  We have never seen Canada Goose populations this high ever, mallard numbers are the greatest since the early 1970’s and the snows just keep on coming. A successful hunt requires adequate numbers of birds.  I guarantee that there will not be a shortage of birds.
  • Reason number two is that there are practically no hunters in the area.  I can count the number of truly serious local hunters within a twenty-mile radius on one hand. Three of them are going to be looking after your group. Overcrowding is not a problem here.
  • Reason number three is that we have an intimate knowledge of the land. Farming the land for two generations means that we know the location of every pothole, every back road and every creek in the area.   Farm employees are working the fields daily. Spotting and locating birds is part of their job description.  Reporting via cellular phone keeps us up to date on bird activity over the entire farm.  Nobody knows the land like we do.
  • Fourth reason - land ownership.  This means that we can control the amount of hunting pressure applied to any one species or any particular portion of our farm prior to your arrival.  Simply let us know when you book your hunt which birds you wish to hunt and they will be ready for you when you get here.
  • The other thirty thousand reasons is our land base. We will provide exclusive access for you and your group to over twenty thousand acres of cropland and prime waterfowl habitat in the heart of the Prairie Pothole for the duration of your hunt. Nobody but your group will hunt our land.
